Scientists from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Project Dhvani in India have found that territorial behavior and diet are key factors in explaining why some birds sing more at dawn. The research, conducted in India’s Western Ghats mountain range, investigated the singing patterns of 69 bird species using passive acoustic monitoring. This technique involves setting up microphones throughout the forest to record bird vocalizations continuously throughout the day.

Lead author Vijay Ramesh, a postdoctoral researcher at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, stated that the study shows social factors like territoriality and feeding habits are more influential in driving dawn singing behavior than environmental conditions. The findings challenge traditional theories that primarily attribute early morning singing to factors such as ambient light and temperature.

The research contributes to a deeper understanding of bird behavior and highlights the importance of behavioral factors in vocal activity patterns observed in one of the world’s recognized biodiversity hotspots.
