Pinellas Sheriffs Urge Safe Medication Disposal in County
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents not to flush unused prescription medications. The office says that when medications are flushed, they can contaminate Florida’s waterways and harm marine life. A recent study found traces of pharmaceuticals in nearly all redfish tested in Tampa Bay and other Florida estuaries.
The new initiative, called Operation Medicine Cabinet, makes it easy for residents to safely dispose of medications. The sheriff’s office accepts pills, liquids, inhalers, patches, and auto-injectors. They do not accept syringes or other medical equipment.
No identification or forms are needed to drop off medications. Residents are asked to place pills in a sealable plastic bag after removing them from bottles. Liquids should remain in their original containers, with the caps taped down. Auto-injectors should be secured in taped boxes.
Medications can be dropped off at the Sheriff’s Administration Building at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo and the North District Station at 2496 Bayshore Boulevard in Dunedin. Other law enforcement agencies and pharmacies throughout the county are also accepting medications.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that proper disposal of medications helps keep them out of Florida’s waterways and prevents potential misuse.
