Cornell Study: Oxybutynin May Treat Mitochondrial Disorders
Cornell University researchers have discovered a new potential use for the drug oxybutynin, which is typically prescribed for bladder incontinence. In a study published in the American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, the team reported that oxybutynin may help overcome mitochondrial dysfunction by enhancing cellular glycolysis and promoting muscle formation. The researchers found that the drug interacts with proteins involved in mRNA function.
Assistant Professor Joeva Barrow led the study and explained that when mitochondria are damaged, cells and tissues can deteriorate, leading to severe outcomes. Mitochondrial diseases affect approximately one in 5,000 people and can cause muscle weakness, neurological decline, heart problems, and shortened lifespans, especially in children. Currently, there are no cures or highly effective treatments available for these conditions.
The research focused on testing small molecules directly on muscle stem cells, an approach differing from previous studies that used artificial cell systems. While no human patients have been treated with oxybutynin for mitochondrial diseases, the findings suggest that the drug could be repurposed for this serious class of genetic illnesses if further studies confirm its benefits.
