Cayuga Sheriff's Office Enhances Outreach, Training in October

Cayuga County Sheriff's Office reported several activities for October 2025. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Road Patrol Deputies wore pink badges to promote screening and prevention. The badges were purchased and provided each year by the Deputy Sheriff’s Police Association of Cayuga County.

The office also supported education initiatives through the Auburn Enlarged City School District and the United Way of Cayuga County’s Book Buddies program, with both Undersheriff Peenstra and Sheriff Schenck spending time reading with program participants.

In October, Nicholas Gray joined the Custody Division as a Deputy Sheriff. Additionally, Deputy Matthew Donovan graduated from the Oswego County Police Academy and has been assigned to the Road Patrol Division, where he will begin field training.

Deputy Forgham, ID Officer Kelly, and Deputy Sherman completed the SWAT Operators Course hosted by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. All three now serve on the Emergency Response Team.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed with local agencies including Cayuga Community College and Community Action Programs Cayuga/Seneca (CAP) setting up a display of purple pinwheels on the Auburn CCC Campus lawn to raise awareness and support survivors.

On October 28, the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office Facebook page reached 20,000 followers. On the same day, the agency hosted Student Government Day, during which Deputy Kelly led a tour of the Public Safety Complex for area students, 911 personnel, other county departments, and local state legislators.

Patrol statistics for October 2025 include 1,637 calls for service, 139 traffic tickets, 382 traffic stops, and 30 arrests for penal law or warrant arrests. There were 5 driving while intoxicated arrests and 34 motor vehicle accidents. Civil and warrant attempts numbered 238.

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) began the month with 36 active cases. During the month, 7 new cases were assigned, 9 were closed by arrest, 3 were closed by investigation, and the number of active cases increased to 40 by month’s end.

Custody statistics for October showed an average daily population of 149 individuals, with 97 admissions and 115 discharges. Daily averages also included 6 other local incarcerated individuals boarded, 15 federal incarcerated individuals boarded, and 21 parole violators held. Additionally, 21 incarcerated individuals were transported in by NYSDOCCS, and 15,316 meals were served.

The Centralized Arraignment process through CAP processed 49 arrestees during the month.

Civil division statistics for October included the service of 196 civil papers. The office received $89,607.79, from which $8,784.16 was remitted to the treasurer.
