Northeast Pennsylvania faces elevated fire risk after weather alert
Special Weather Statement prompts elevated fire risk in parts of Northeast Pennsylvania
SCRANTON, Pa. — The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Special Weather Statement dated April 23 for parts of Northeast Pennsylvania, including Bradford, Susquehanna, Northern Wayne, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike and Southern Wayne counties.
Forecasters say conditions this afternoon will be dry, with relative humidity as low as 25% to 35%. Wind gusts are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, creating an increased risk for rapid wildfire spread, especially in dry grass and wooded areas.
The statement notes that fires could start easily and spread quickly under these conditions.
Residents are urged to use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire. Avoid burning debris, properly dispose of cigarettes and be careful when using machinery or open flames. If a fire starts, it could spread rapidly.
The statement was issued in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Officials urged residents to stay alert and help prevent wildfires.
