Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Central New York
Broome County Emergency Services shared an alert from the National Weather Service in Binghamton, warning of severe thunderstorms across several counties in central New York.
The Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for South central Oneida County, Otsego County, Broome County, Southeastern Madison County, Northwestern Delaware County, Southern Cortland County, Southeastern Chemung County, Tioga County, Southeastern Tompkins County, and Chenango County until 1:15 PM EDT.
At 12:15 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Poolville to near Chemung and moving east at 50 mph. The radar-indicated hazards include 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail.
The alert said to expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. It listed communities that could be affected, including Binghamton, Vestal, Johnson City, Oneonta, Endicott, Southport, Barton, Norwich, Maine, and Eaton.
Broome County Emergency Services urged residents to remain alert for a possible tornado and noted tornadoes can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. It advised that if a tornado is spotted, people should go at once into a basement or small central room in a sturdy structure. The alert also recommended moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 3:00 PM EDT for central New York.
