Cornell Human Ecology Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary

The College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is marking the 100th anniversary of its founding in 1925. The college’s roots extend back well before its official establishment. A series of early educational pamphlets led to in-person classes, and then to the formation of a department known as home economics, which eventually developed into a school and later a college.

Cornell was among the first private research universities to offer such a program. Today, it remains the only Ivy League university with a college dedicated exclusively to human ecology. The field initially focused on improving American health and hygiene through research in areas such as vitamins, nutrition, food storage, household efficiency, bacteriology, clothing and textiles, and child development.

Since being renamed human ecology in 1969, the discipline has widened to include studies in genomics, ergonomics, policy analysis, human-centered design, and life course studies.
