Cornell Unveils Soft Robot for Precision Agriculture

Cornell University researchers have developed a soft robotic device designed to improve plant health monitoring and treatment. The device gently grips plant leaves and injects sensors, allowing for precise detection and communication about a plant’s environment. It is also capable of delivering genetic material, a feature that may assist in future plant bioengineering efforts.

This development aims to advance precision agriculture by enabling safe, repeatable, and individualized interventions at the level of single plants. The work is led by Professor Robert F. Shepherd of the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and is a collaboration with researchers from the Boyce Thompson Institute, the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.

The project addresses the need for early and accurate insights into plant health as environmental pressures continue to challenge horticulture and agriculture.
