Livonia Native Elmer Stone Pioneers Transatlantic Flight
Livonia native Commander Elmer F. Stone made aviation history in 1919 as one of the two pilots for the Navy’s Curtiss NC-4 flying boat on the first-ever transatlantic flight. The journey began in Rockaway, New York, and ended in Plymouth, England, with the aircraft making stops along the route, including a layover in the Azores. Although the plane was in the air for approximately 54 hours, the overall mission lasted 23 days.
Stone was born in 1887 and began his career in 1910 as a cadet with the US Revenue Cutter Service, a predecessor to the US Coast Guard. He pursued studies in aeronautical engineering and received flight training at a Navy facility in Florida, becoming the Coast Guard’s first pilot in 1917. During World War I, Stone served aboard the USS Huntington, performing convoy escort duty from July until October 1917, and was later awarded the Victory Medal with a Patrol Clasp.
In 1934, Stone set a speed record for a seaplane by flying at 191 miles per hour over a 2.8-mile course. After a long career in both the Navy and Coast Guard, Elmer Stone passed away in 1936. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the US Naval Aviation Hall of Honor in 1983.
