Arctic Blast Delivers Bitter Cold, Heavy Snowfall

An arctic front moving through Scranton, Pennsylvania today will bring a bitter cold air mass accompanied by strong, gusty winds, resulting in dangerously cold wind chills starting tonight and continuing into early Saturday. In Lackawanna County, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday.

Meteorologists expect widespread and significant snowfall beginning early Sunday morning and extending into Monday, with overall increased confidence in the system’s track, timing, and snow amounts. Authorities in Lackawanna County, working with the Lackawanna County Emergency Management Agency, have emphasized that residents should prepare for extremely cold conditions as the arctic air blast is forecast to persist throughout the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY, issued the alert on January 23, 2026, at 2:22 PM, noting that an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for northern Oneida County from 7 p.m. Friday through 10 a.m. Saturday and Cold Weather Advisories have been issued for all other counties for the same time. Additional Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for all counties from 1 a.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday.
