Prioritize Fire Safety: Keep 3 Feet Clear!

Staff Report / Binghamtonlocal.org

As fall approaches, the Broome County Office of Emergency Services in Binghamton, NY, is urging residents to prioritize fire safety. To reduce the risk of fire hazards at home, it is crucial to keep any items that can burn at least 3 feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters, and candles.

Additionally, individuals should plug space heaters directly into the wall and ensure they are turned off when leaving a room or going to bed. The oven should never be used as a means to heat the home. Regularly checking and replacing smoke detector batteries is also emphasized as a vital safety measure.

For more information, residents can refer to the New York State Department of Homeland and Emergency Services' fire safety guidelines for home heating at [NYS Fire Safety Guidelines](https://on.ny.gov/3TKGaug).
