Binghamton Celebrates 65th Columbus Day Festival

Staff Report / Binghamtonlocal.org

The City of Binghamton held the 65th Annual Columbus Day Tournament of Marching Bands, Parade & Italian Festival on Monday, October 14th. Mayor Jared Kraham led the event with an Italian Flag-Raising ceremony. Remarks were made by Carman Garufi of Garufi Law, PC; former Mayor and Parade Marshal, Rich Bucci; and a performance by Tri-Cities Opera tenor Sergio Mandujano, who sang “La donna è mobile.”

The parade included a band competition judged by representatives from the NY Federation of Contest Judges. High school marching bands from Athens and Tioga, PA, Whitney Point, Johnson City, and Union Endicott participated in three divisions, competing for trophies and cash awards in Band, Color Guard, and Drum Major categories.

The parade featured various Italian American heritage organizations, ethnic businesses, and elected officials from local, state, and federal government. Participants included antique cars, fire trucks, and both amateur and professional sports teams. Despite rainy weather, attendees supported the Italian food concessions managed by the Sons & Daughters of Italy and volunteers from St. Mary’s Church.
