Winter Storm Hits Twin Tiers on Thanksgiving Day
Staff Report / Binghamtonlocal.org
A winter storm is impacting the Twin Tiers and Central New York on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024, with heavy snowfall expected this morning. The heaviest snowfall will be dependent on elevation, with lower valley areas anticipating a transition to rain or a wintry mix by late morning.
Precipitation is expected to continue into Thursday afternoon, with warmer air moving into the Poconos and Wyoming Valley around mid-morning. This change will cause snow to turn back to rain in these areas and will extend into the lower elevations of Central New York early in the afternoon. Lake effect snow showers are anticipated to develop on Friday and last through the weekend, driven by northwest winds that will bring in the coldest air mass of the winter.
Hazardous driving conditions are likely, especially in higher terrain areas, and there is a possibility of isolated power outages due to the wet, dense snow. However, light winds are expected to reduce this risk. The potential for accumulating lake effect snow will begin on Friday.
Forecasters note that the timing of the changeover from snow to rain and the elevation will significantly affect snow accumulation in the region. Residents and travelers are advised to prepare and stay informed by monitoring updates from the National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY.
