DoD Halts Novel Tick-Borne Disease Test

Laura Goodman, Ph.D. ’07, an assistant professor at Cornell University, was nearing finalization of a prototype test designed to detect any tick-borne disease before symptoms appear, according to reports from Cornell in Ithaca. The test is unique because it could identify even unknown diseases transmitted by ticks. Ticks are known to spread hundreds of disease agents and are responsible for at least two-thirds of vector-borne diseases in the United States.

Research shows that there could be as many as 10 times more people infected with tick-borne illnesses than the number detected by current diagnostics, based on comparisons between confirmed diagnoses and insurance claims, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In April, however, Goodman received a stop-work order on the research project, which had been commissioned by the U.S. Department of Defense. The order has halted progress on the project at an early stage, affecting efforts to advance the new testing method.
