Binghamton Multi-Family Fire Injures, Displaces Residents

At 8:29 AM today, the Binghamton Fire Department was dispatched to a working fire at a multi-family residence located at 25 Clarke Street. Crews found fire coming from a second‐floor bedroom in the rear corner with the flames extending to the third floor and attic. A rapid and aggressive offensive was launched to knock down the fire while crews conducted primary searches and worked to ventilate the structure.

A third-floor occupant was removed safely via the interior stairwell and transported by Superior Ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Another victim who left the fire room using the rear stairwell was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and minor burns but refused to be transported. In addition, a rescuer from the second floor was reached via a ladder and treated for smoke inhalation before also refusing transport.

Crews remained on the scene for nearly three hours to perform overhaul and address hot spots that had traveled through walls and ceilings. Apparatus from Vestal Fire and 5 Mile Point were sent to cover the city during the response. The Red Cross is currently assisting nine displaced adults. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
