Daytona Sees Record Right Whale Calves Count

The 21st right whale calf of the season was reported off Daytona Beach, Florida. This marks the first time in 15 years that more than 20 calves have been documented in a season. Experts from NOAA point out that with fewer than 400 right whales remaining in the wild, which include around 70 reproductively active females, 20 newborn calves are considered a productive year.

The calf and its mother, Slalom (right whale catalog #1245), were sighted on January 22 by beachgoers and the Marineland Right Whale Project, and they were seen again on January 24. Earlier in December, Slalom was seen during an aerial survey off the coast of Georgia without a calf.
